Own the outcome, not just the task
Why this rule exists
There's a world of difference between someone who completes the task they were handed and someone who owns the outcome that task was meant to produce, and the gap between them is where most things quietly fail. Owning the task means you did what was asked; owning the outcome means you care whether the thing actually worked, and you chase down the loose ends, the edge cases, and the 'that's not technically my job' gaps that otherwise fall between people. On a small team we can't afford the diffusion of responsibility where everyone did their part and the whole still failed, because there's no one else to catch it. Real ownership means when you see a problem you either fix it or make sure someone does, rather than noting it's not your area and walking on. This is what lets us run without a thick layer of management chasing people: we trust that whoever owns a thing will steer it all the way to actually-working, not just to technically-done.
In practice
When you take something on, take on the goal behind it, not just the literal instructions, and hold yourself accountable to whether the goal was met. Chase the loose ends and the unglamorous edge cases instead of stopping at the happy path. When you notice something broken or about to break, even outside your lane, either fix it or hand it clearly to someone who will, rather than assuming it's handled. Follow your work into production and watch whether it actually did what it was supposed to, because shipping isn't the finish line, working is. When something you own goes wrong, say 'I've got it' before you say whose fault it was. And define done as 'the outcome happened,' not 'my part is merged.'
When it doesn't apply
Ownership isn't heroism or martyrdom; owning an outcome includes pulling in help, delegating, and saying when something's too big for you, so it doesn't mean silently carrying everything alone. And clear ownership requires clear boundaries, if everyone owns everything, no one really owns anything, so ownership works best when it's actually assigned.
