Rule 5 of 32 · Chapter I — The Steady Centre
Refuse any win you would have to become a worse person to get.
Why this rule exists
Every shortcut that works teaches you to take it again, and the person who emerges after enough of them is not someone you chose to be. Reputations are built slowly and spent instantly. The prize you take by lying is also permanently attached to the lie — you never get to enjoy it cleanly.
In practice
Before a decision with an obvious ethical soft spot, ask what habit you're installing if this works. Walk away from deals, jobs, and arguments that require you to shade the truth, cut someone out quietly, or take credit that isn't yours. Say no early and out loud, so you don't have to negotiate with yourself at the last minute.
When it doesn't apply
Not every compromise is corruption — trimming a plan, conceding a point, or accepting a smaller share is ordinary adult negotiation. Reserve the refusal for things that touch honesty, safety, or someone else's dignity.
